Kiss Comic Book is published by Marvel Comics

The Kiss Comic Book is published by Marvel Comics tributing the rock group Kiss on June 30, 1977.

Kiss Comic Book, Kiss Commics, Kiss 1977

In 1977 Marvel Comics published a magazine-format full-color Kiss Comic Book presenting the band as superheroes.

Blood from each band member was drawn by a registered nurse, witnessed by a notary public, and poured into the vats of red ink used for printing the comic at Marvel's Borden Ink plant in Depew, New York.

Marvel also published a second Kiss Comic Book in 1979 with much less fanfare.

In 1997, Image comics began publishing Todd McFarlane's Kiss: Psycho Circus, a much darker and mystical series than the previous Kiss comics. 31 issues were published.

In 2002, Dark Horse comics published a Kiss comic book authored by X-Men writer Joe Casey, which lasted for thirteen issues. Each issue was released in two versions, one with a drawn cover and one with a photo cover. The first four of these stories were later collected in a graphic novel entitled Rediscovery. On January 30 2007 it was announced that the KISS Comics Group, a joint venture between Platinum Studios and the band, would launch a new comic "KISS 4K" with an oversized $50 Destroyer Edition, at the Wizard World Los Angeles Convention in March and with an ongoing series to follow in May by writer Ricky Sprague and artist Kevin Crossley

James Bond film Moonraker premieres

James Bond film "Moonraker" premieres in U.S. on June 29, 1979.

James Bond, Moonraker, James Bond 1979

Moonraker (1979) is the eleventh spy film in the James Bond series, and the fourth to star Roger Moore as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond.

The third and final film in the series to be directed by Lewis Gilbert, it co-stars Lois Chiles, Michael Lonsdale, Corinne Clery, and Richard Kiel. In the film, Bond is sent to investigate the mysterious theft of a space shuttle, leading him to Hugo Drax, the owner of the shuttle-manufacturing firm. Along with the space scientist Dr. Holly Goodhead, Bond follows the trail of clues from California to Venice, Italy, Rio de Janeiro, and the Amazon rain forest, and finally into outer space in a bid to prevent a plot to wipe out the world population and to re-create humanity with a master race.

James Bond Moonraker was intended by its creator Ian Fleming to be turned into a film even before he completed the novel in 1954, since he based the novel on a manuscript he had written even earlier than this.

The producers of the James Bond film series had originally intended to do Moonraker in 1973 with Roger Moore making his debut as Bond, but the making of this movie was put on hold and it was finally released in 1979, coinciding with the rise of the science fiction genre in the wake of the Star Wars phenomenon.

Moonraker was the highest grossing film of the series until the Pierce Brosnan Bond film GoldenEye (1995). Moonraker earned a total of $210,300,000 worldwide — surpassing the preceding Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me (1977). Moonraker was also noted for its high production cost for a Bond film, spending almost twice as much money as The Spy Who Loved Me. Derek Meddings, a long-time contributor to the James Bond series, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for the special effects used in this movie and its space scenes.

Jimi Hendrix announces new bassist Billy Cox

Jimi Hendrix announces new bassist, old army buddy Billy Cox on June 28, 1969

Jimi Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix new bassist Billy Cox, Billy Cox

Billy Cox re-united with Jimi Hendrix in 1969, when Hendrix called on Cox to play bass in the Band of Gypsys.

In addition to the Band of Gypsys release, Cox's bass playing can be heard on such posthumously released Hendrix albums as South Saturn Delta, Live at Woodstock, Live at the Fillmore East, Nine to the Universe, and a reconstructed version of First Rays of the New Rising Sun, in addition to such home-videos as Live at the Isle of Wight 1970, Live at Woodstock, The Dick Cavett Show, Rainbow Bridge, and Jimi Hendrix.

Billy Cox played at Woodstock with Hendrix's Gypsy Sun and Rainbows;

On September 8, 2006, Cox mentioned in an interview on the KQRS-FM morning show that he can be heard playing bass on five of the first notes of Jimi Hendrix's famous Woodstock "Star Spangled Banner". The rendition was completely impromptu according to him. He said he thought to himself at the moment, "I realized we had not rehearsed this, I had better lay off." He toured with Hendrix (with Mitch Mitchell on drums) for most of 1970 on the Cry of Love tour. Cox lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where he remains active in music, and acts as an ambassador for Jimi Hendrix, his music and philosophy.

Muhammad Ali retires as boxing champ on June 27, 1979

Muhammad Ali retires as boxing champ on June 27, 1979

Muhammad Ali, Larry Homes, Muhammad Ali 1980

Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr.; January 17, 1942) is an American former boxer and three-time World Heavyweight Champion, who is widely considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.

As an amateur, he won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. After turning professional, he went on to become the first and only boxer to win the lineal heavyweight championship three times.

Originally known as Cassius Clay, Ali changed his name after joining the Nation of Islam in 1964, subsequently converting to Sunni Islam in 1975. In 1967, Ali refused to be conscripted into the U.S. military, based on his religious beliefs and opposition to the Vietnam War. He was arrested and found guilty on draft evasion charges, stripped of his boxing title, and his boxing license was suspended. He was not imprisoned, but did not fight again for nearly four years while his appeal worked its way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, where it was successful.

Nicknamed "The Greatest", Muhammad Ali was involved in several historic boxing matches.

Notable among these are three with rival Joe Frazier and one with George Foreman, whom he beat by knockout to win the world heavyweight title for the second time. He suffered only five losses (four decisions and one TKO by retirement from the bout) with no draws in his career, while amassing 56 wins (37 knockouts and 19 decisions). Ali was well known for his unorthodox fighting style, which he described as "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee", and employing techniques such as the rope-a-dope. He was also known for his pre-match hype, where he would "trash talk" opponents on television and in person some time before the match, often with rhymes. These personality quips and idioms, along with an unorthodox fighting technique, made him a cultural icon.

I Love Lucy last airs on CBS-TV

"I Love Lucy," last airs on CBS-TV on June 24, 1957

I Love Lucy, Lucille Ball

I Love Lucy is an American television sitcom starring Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley.

The black-and-white series originally ran from October 15, 1951 to May 6, 1957 on the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). When the original series ended, the show continued for three more seasons with 13 one-hour specials, running from 1957 to 1960, known first as The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show and later in reruns as The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.

I Love Lucy was the most-watched show in the United States in four of its six seasons

and was the first to end its run at the top of the Nielsen ratings (an accomplishment later matched by The Andy Griffith Show and Seinfeld). I Love Lucy is still syndicated in dozens of languages across the world.

The show was the first scripted TV program to be shot on 35 mm film in front of a studio audience, won five Emmy Awards and received numerous nominations. In 2002, it ranked second on TV Guide's list of television's greatest shows, behind Seinfeld and ahead of The Honeymooners. In 2007 it was listed as one of Time magazine's "100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME."

Alice Cooper falls off the stage in Vancouver

Alice Cooper falls off the stage in Vancouver and breaks 6 ribs during the Welcome To My Nightmare tour on June 23, 1975

Alice Cooper, Alice Cooper 1975, Welcome To My Nightmare

His real name is Vincent Furnier, Alice Cooper was the name of the band, but the name became so associated with the lead singer that he took it.

"Alice Cooper" is the name of a girl who was accused of being a witch in the 1600s, but Furnier didn't know that when he took the name. He tried to choose a sweet, innocent sounding name that would contrast against the shocking stage show. A rumor has persisted that Cooper got the name from a Ouija board.

Welcome to My Nightmare is a concept album by Alice Cooper, released in 1975.

This was Alice Cooper's first solo album (all previous Alice Cooper releases were band efforts). The cover artwork was created by Drew Struzan for Pacific Eye & Ear. Rolling Stone would later rank it as one of the "Top 100 Album Covers Of All Time".

Welcome to My Nightmare is a concept album. The songs, heard in sequence, form a journey through the nightmares of a child named Steven.

Welcome to My Nightmare inspired the Alice Cooper: The Nightmare TV special and a worldwide concert tour in 1975, and the Welcome To My Nightmare concert film in 1976.

The song Welcome to my Nightmare is a parody of the 1968 novel "There's a Nightmare in My Closet"

The second Glastonbury Festival in England took place

The second Glastonbury Festival in England took place. Held over 5 days to coincide with the summer solstice, (the weather was, for a British 'summer' very good). Acts who appeared included: Melanie, Quintessence, David Bowie, The Edgar Broughton Band, Pink Fairies, Terry Reid - with David Lyndley and Linda Lewis, Gong, Hawkwind, Arthur Brown, Brinsley Schwarz, Fairport Convention, Family and Traffic. Over 7,000 fans attended the event on June 22, 1971

Glastonbury Festival, Glastonbury Festival 1971

The Glastonbury festival was heavily influenced by hippie ethics and the free festival movement in the early 1970s, beginning with the Isle of Wight Festival, which featured performances by The Who, amongst other artists.

Afterward, organiser Michael Eavis stated that he decided to host the first festival, then called Pilton Festival, after seeing an open air Led Zeppelin concert at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music 1970 at the nearby Bath and West Showground in 1970. The festival retains vestiges of this tradition such as the Green Fields area which includes the Green Futures and Healing Field.

The Glastonbury music festival takes place in South West England at Worthy Farm between the small villages of Pilton and Pylle, six miles east of the town of Glastonbury, overlooked by the Glastonbury Tor in the mystical "Vale of Avalon". The area has a number of legends and spiritual traditions, and is a "New Age" site of interest: several ley lines are considered to converge on the Tor. The nearest town to the festival site is Shepton Mallet, three miles (5 km) north east, but there continues to be interaction between the people espousing alternative lifestyles living in Glastonbury and the festival itself. The farm is situated between the A361 and A37 roads.

The first Glastonbury festival at Worthy Farm was the Pilton Pop, Blues & Folk Festival, mounted by Michael Eavis in September 1970, and attended by 1,500 people.

The first act to perform was the group Stackridge; the headline act was originally Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders but this act was replaced at short notice by Tyrannosaurus Rex, later known as T.Rex.

The larger free festival at the summer solstice in June the next year was the first to attract nationwide interest, and the event became an important precursor of the later Glastonbury Festivals. The Glastonbury Fayre of 1971 was instigated by Andrew Kerr and organised with help from Arabella Churchill, Thomas Crimble, Bill Harkin, Gilberto Gil, Mark Irons, and Jytte Klamer. The 1971 festival featured the first incarnation of the "Pyramid Stage" conceived by Bill Harkin, built from scaffolding and metal sheeting.

Performers included David Bowie, Traffic, Fairport Convention, Quintessence, Hawkwind, Skin Alley, The Worthy Farm Windfuckers and Melanie. It was paid for by its supporters and advocates of its ideal, and embraced a mediaeval tradition of music, dance, poetry, theatre, lights and spontaneous entertainment. The 1971 festival was filmed by Nicolas Roeg and David Puttnam and was released as a film called simply Glastonbury Fayre.

There was a small unplanned event in 1978, when the convoy of vehicles from the Stonehenge festival was directed by police to Worthy Farm; the festival was then revived the following year (1979) by Churchill, Crimble, Kerr and Eavis, in an event for the Year of the Child, which lost money.

Columbia Records announces first mass production of 33-1/3-rpm long-player vinyl records

Columbia Records announces first mass production of 33-1/3-rpm long-player vinyl records. Sceptics fail to see the company's wisdom as the 78 record is at an all-time high on June 21, 1948

Columbia Records, 33rpm, vinyl records

Both the microgroove LP 33 1/3 rpm vinyl record and the 45 rpm single records are made from vinyl plastic that is flexible and unbreakable in normal use. However, the vinyl records are easier to scratch or gouge, and much more prone to warping.

In 1931, RCA Victor (which evolved from the Johnson and Berliner's Victor Talking Machine Company) launched the first commercially available vinyl long-playing record, marketed as "Program Transcription" discs. These revolutionary discs were designed for playback at 331/3 rpm and pressed on a 30 cm diameter flexible plastic disc, with a duration of about ten minutes playing time per side. In Roland Gelatt's book The Fabulous Phonograph, the author notes that RCA Victor's early introduction of a long-play disc was a commercial failure for several reasons including the lack of affordable, reliable consumer playback equipment and consumer wariness during the Great Depression. Because of financial hardships that plagued the recording industry during that period (and RCA's own parched revenues), Victor's "long playing" records were quietly discontinued by early 1933.

There was also a small batch of "longer playing" vinyl records issued in the very early 1930s: Columbia introduced 10" 'longer playing' vinyl records (18000-D series), as well as a series of double-grooved or longer playing 10" vinyl records on their Harmony, Clarion & Velvet Tone cheap labels. All of these were phased out in mid-1932.

However, vinyl's lower surface noise level than shellac was not forgotten, nor was its durability. In the late '30s, radio commercials and pre-recorded radio programs being sent to disc jockeys started being stamped in vinyl, so they would not break in the mail. In the mid-1940s, special DJ copies of records started being made of vinyl also, for the same reason. These were all 78 rpm. During and after World War II, when shellac supplies were extremely limited, some 78 rpm records were pressed in vinyl instead of shellac, particularly the six-minute 12-inch (30 cm) 78 rpm records produced by V-Disc for distribution to US troops in World War II. In the '40s, radio transcriptions, which were usually on 16-inch records, but sometimes 12-inch, were always made of vinyl, but cut at 331/3 rpm. Shorter transcriptions were often cut at 78 rpm.

Beginning in 1939, Dr. Peter Goldmark and his staff at Columbia Records undertook efforts to address problems of recording and playing back narrow grooves and developing an inexpensive, reliable consumer playback system. The 12-inch (30 cm) Long Play (LP) 331/3 rpm microgroove vinyl record album was introduced by the Columbia Record Company at a New York press conference on June 21, 1948.

Unwilling to accept and license Columbia's system, in February 1949 RCA Victor released the first 45 rpm single, 7 inches in diameter with a large center hole. The 45 rpm player included a changing mechanism that allowed multiple disks to be stacked, much as a conventional changer handled 78s. The short playing time of a single 45 rpm side meant that long works, such as symphonies, had to be released on multiple 45s (rather than a single LP), but RCA claimed that the new high-speed changer rendered side breaks so brief as to be inaudible or inconsequential. Early 45 rpm records were made from either vinyl or polystyrene. They had a playing time of eight minutes.

Another size and format was that of radio transcription discs beginning in the 1940s. These records were usually vinyl, 33 RPM, and 16 inches in diameter. No home record player could accommodate such large records, and they were used mainly by radio stations. They were on average 15 minutes per side and contained several songs or radio program material. These vinyl records became less common when tape recorders began being used for radio transcriptions around 1949.

Newport 69 Pop Festival begins and Jimi Hendrix gets $120,000 to appear

Newport 69 Pop Festival begins and Jimi Hendrix gets $120,000 to appear, 150,000 attend the event on June 20, 1969

Newport 69 Pop Festival, Newport 69, Jimi Hendrix Newport 69

The Newport 69 Pop Festival

held in Costa Mesa, California, August 3-4, 1968, was the first music concert ever to have more than 100,000 paid attendees.

There were two separate events staged in the late 1960s that are commonly referred to as the "Newport Pop Festival." The first was called the Newport Pop Festival, held at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, California, the weekend of August 3-4, 1968. The second event was originally billed as "Newport 69," and was held over the three-day weekend of June 20-22, 1969 in Northridge, California at Devonshire Downs. In published writings over the last 40 years, this latter event has been referred to as the "

Newport 69 Pop Festival

" the "Newport Pop Festival 1969" and simply the "Newport Pop Festival." Subsequently, much confusion has been created over the years between the 1968 and 1969 events. Some of this confusion was generated by the participating musicians themselves who, later, in their interviews, kept getting the two events mixed up. The latter event was organized by Mark Robinson (age 25) who was one of the three promoters of the original Newport Pop Festival in 1968. The other two promoters of the 68 event were Gary R. Schmidt (age 26) and his father Al Schmidt. Al was not a rock n roller but an entrepreneural business man that helped with the money and licensing. There was a brief law suit between the two Schmidts and Robinson just prior to the "Newport 69" show which the Schmidts had declined to be involved in because of the cost of the acts, The entire band budget for the 68 show was under 50,000 dollars while Robinson paid Jimi Hendrix alone 50,000 dollars for the 69 event. This was an amount of money unheard of at that time for a rock act. The 68 show made money and the 69 show did not. The law suit was over trade names and the last few days before the 69 show they had to use disclaimers in advertising "not afiliated with the Newport Pop Festival" and they would not have been able to do a "Newport 70". show using that name.

Led Zeppelin begins their last European tour

Led Zeppelin begins their last European tour on June 17, 1980

Led Zeppelin Tour Over Europe 1980

Tour Over Europe 1980 was the last concert tour by the English rock band Led Zeppelin.

The tour commenced on June 17 and concluded on July 7, 1980. All of the shows on the tour took place in cities throughout Germany, with the exceptions of one show each at Brussels, Rotterdam, Vienna and Zürich.

This was the first series of concerts performed by the band since their shows at Knebworth almost a year before. Singer Robert Plant was reluctant to tour the United States, and the band wanted to avoid some of the negative press attention which had dogged them in the United Kingdom, so as a compromise Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant decided to schedule a short European tour. He hoped that being on the road again would rejuvenate Plant's enthusiasm for touring, which would eventually lead to the band's return to the U.S.

Led Zeppelin performed rehearsals for the tour at the Rainbow Theatre and Victoria Theatre in London, and then at Shepperton Studios, Middlesex.

During this tour the band played small venues with a scaled down PA and a modest stage and lighting setup. As such, it had a much more low-key feel than had been witnessed on recent tours. The set list was also shorter at approximately two hours in duration, with some of the band's lengthier songs such as "No Quarter" and "Moby Dick" being discarded. A limited amount of material from the band's most recent album In Through the Out Door, was also performed. The set for these concerts opened with "Train Kept A-Rollin'" which had not been a regular feature of their live sets since 1969. Press coverage of this concert tour was minimal.

Generally speaking, there was a playful and generous spirit about the tour, with guitarist Jimmy Page even handling some of the stage introductions himself for the first time in the band's twelve year career. However, some on-stage problems were also experienced. The June 26th show at Vienna was interrupted during "White Summer", as Page was hit in the face by a firecracker. The organizer stepped up and talked to the audience, and asked the person responsible to come to the stage to have a word with him. After a delay, the band returned to play "Kashmir" and finish the show. The June 27th show at Nuremberg came to an abrupt end after the third song when John Bonham collapsed on stage and was rushed to a hospital. Press speculation arose that Bonham's problem was caused by an excess of alcohol and drugs, but the band claimed that he had simply overeaten.

The poster of the tour announced a second concert at Berlin, on July 8, but this show was never performed. The final full-length concert Led Zeppelin played until 2007 was on July 7, with "Whole Lotta Love" being the final song performed at this gig.
